Superheroes are just good people in fancy costumes.
The best part of making the “Dealbreaker” music video was watching the leading ladies of all five videos come together to fight for what they want in love, to fight on behalf of women who are not being treated like they should be.
That’s what I want to talk about, as a person and as a musician. I want to talk about how we get stuck in relationships that don’t make us feel good… or about how we allow ourselves be the lowest priority in our own lives. I want to talk about the ways we are silent and the ways we let ourselves be pushed around. And more than that I want to try to learn, together, how to change the story. I want us all to learn to be superheroes.
I think it starts with how we see ourselves.
Can you see the superhero in you?
Can you see someone who is strong and powerful and worth all the good this world has to offer?
I can honestly say I have spent the better part of my life learning how to see these things in myself. And it hasn’t been easy. And there are days I don’t feel like feeling great. (weird, right?) And there are days where I don’t want to feel the pressure of admitting I’m powerful… Because if I am powerful… I alone am responsible for my life. I am responsible for making the most out of the life I’ve been given. I am accountable for the choices I make and how I treat the people around me. And there are some days that I’m just not in the mood for that responsibility.
But mostly, I feel strong. I feel empowered and alive inside my life. Sure, there are still innumerable disappointments- things that don’t go according to plan, little curveballs and big heartbreaks- but I feel prepared to handle what I can. I feel powerful enough to tackle what lies ahead
Because I am an average, every day superhero. Just like you. Just like the girls in the “Dealbreaker” video. And we got this.
The first step is to allow yourself to believe it. Allow yourself to buy into the idea that you are powerful…. strong … resilient … unstoppable.
I promise, as soon as you start to believe it, you will see how true it is.
